Full day in the Uyuni salt flat: During a short stay it is also possible to visit the magnificent Uyuni salt flat with our day tour.

The Uyuni salt flat is the largest salt desert in the world with an area of 10 582 km², is located at 3 663 m.a.s.l. in the southwest of Bolivia, in the province of Daniel Campos, department of Potosi and is part of the altiplanic region of the Andes.

Beauty and solitude in a rugged and inhospitable terrain have never been better represented than in the Salar de Uyuni, surrounded by mountains and volcanoes over 5,000 meters above sea level, the landscape is indescribable. The salt has a depth of 10 centimeters to 8 meters; it is also estimated to contain about 10 billion tons of minerals.

Itinerary

We begin our tour visiting the Cemetery of Trains, a place that keeps the history of the "Uyuni", a place that keeps the history of this privileged place, reflected in the old machines that describe its history in the course of time.

We will continue the tour with a short trip of approximately 30 minutes until arriving at the town of Colchani where we will observe the processing of salt extracted from the largest salt flat on the planet, where you can also see handicrafts made with cactus typical of the region, and inside the salt flat we visit the famous salt mounds. Arriving at the Salt Hotel (Museum) located in the interior of the salt flat, we will be able to appreciate in all its magnitude the salt flat with unforgettable views.

In the afternoon, after a journey of approximately 70 km, we arrive at the heart of the salt flat, the Incahuasi Island where we enjoy a delicious lunch, and then appreciate through a trail the typical flora of the region, enjoy a unique view of the salt flat through a natural viewpoint and the famous Ventana del Inca, a place destined to the Aymara tradition.

On our way back to our starting point we will visit the Ojos de Sal, this way we will say goodbye to this imposing place.

Recommendations

The route to the Salar is very cold, windy and with high solar radiation. During the day it is generally sunny and the temperature is pleasant. It is recommended to bring:

  • Warm and thick clothes.
  • Gloves.
  • Wool socks.
  • Wool hat covering the ears and to protect from the sun.
  • Boots.
  • Lip moisturizer.
  • Sunscreen factor 30+.
  • Very dark sunglasses with ultraviolet filter.
  • Between December and April it is recommended to bring a raincoat.
  • A copy of your passport.
  • Extra water.
