The Funerary Towers of Sillustani

This tour takes us through the archaeological site of Sillustani, located 34 km from the city of Puno, on the shores of the Umayo lagoon at 3840 meters above sea level. It is one of the largest necropolis in America and the most impressive in the world. The Chullpas are monumental buildings considered funerary monuments, some with more than 12 meters high. The way they were built is a challenge to the laws of equilibrium, as they have a smaller diameter at the base than at the top. The one known as "Chullpa del Lagarto" (Lizard Chullpa) is more than 12 meters high, 7.20 meters in diameter at the bottom and 7.60 meters at the top. On the way to Sillustani, before reaching the archaeological zone, is the historic town of Atuncolla that shows the colonial church of San Andres and a handicraft center.

Puno - Chullpas De Sillustani - Puno

We pick you up from your hotel to go to Sillustani for 40 minutes approx. and the journey offers beautiful views of Lake Titicaca. At the archaeological site of Sillustani, our local guide will show us the most important sectors of the burial site and give us a good explanation of the Andean culture.

Our visit to Sillustani ends with a wonderful panoramic view of the Umayo Lake.

Then we visit the local farms along the way, here we will learn about the economic activity in the area such as agriculture and animal husbandry. Finally we return to Puno.
